Vamprotica 2005 is a collection of vampire tales that has just about every aspect of their lure covered and then some. There are thirteen diverse stories from some very talented authors.
In Sexual Feeding Alyssa Brooks takes us on a rollercoaster ride with her sexual vampire, a succubus. We get to follow Zoe as she looks for her victim. Ms. Brooks does a great job of throwing the reader into the story and keeping you enthralled until the end.
In the Shadows by J. L. Day a man watches foolish mortals with their puny rituals, he watches them prepare their rite and knows that he wants one for his sustenance. He wants that one, the one with verve and energy. J.L. Day pulls us into the shadows and lets us watch as an immortal takes his pleasure. You can really ‘see’ through the immortal’s eyes and can feel his scorn. Very well done.
Kay Derwydd takes us on an erotic trip through the active imagination of an author in her story, Novel Visions. This was a very well-written story that really makes you think, what if?
Darkest Knight continues Delilah Devlin’s wonderful storytelling tradition.
To ensure her safety, Maddie must take her betrothed to her bed and rid herself of her maidenhead. Having come from the East, Garon has now come home with a deadly affliction. However, he is home. Will these two come to accept each other for their true selves? Delilah Devlin has done it again. In a few pages she turned my front room into a medieval castle and I was there with the characters, for everything. I am impressed with her storytelling abilities and feel that this is the best story in this collection.
Anna Evans takes us on a quirky trip into the lives of three vampires in her story Fang Dysfunction. With a sense of humor and a bit of whimsy, she paints a great picture of vampires with issues like the rest of us.
Love Sucks is a quick view of how two vampires find their meals in the city nightlife. Miranda and her friend Cici are out on the town trying to find a meal. When Cici leaves Miranda to her own devices a stunningly gorgeous man decides that Miranda is what he’s looking for.
When things get a little twisted around, life can do nothing but get better. Erika Kaye has penned a fun story that is a nice, quick read.
The Hunted by Marianne LaCroix is a well-rounded story that really delivers.
Jane is a vampire slayer and has been sent to Atlantic City to destroy an ancient vampire. He’s been killing and there’s no excusing that. Andrei has been in Atlantic City for years and has killed the last three slayers the society has sent against him, but this is the first time they’ve sent a woman. When Jane tells Andrei that she’s been sent to stop his killings he knows that another has invaded his territory because he does not kill. The two of them seek an uneasy truce to fight their common enemy.
This was one of the better stories in this collection so far. It felt more complete than a lot of them have. I have enjoyed Marianne LaCroix’s books in the past just as I enjoyed this story.
House of Pleasure by Inga Mahn brings to life Steve and his search for his company’s missing engineers. He follows the clues to The House of Pleasure. He finds his answers there and much more besides.
Inga Mahn did a great job of weaving mystery in with erotic interludes. Her characters are strong willed and not afraid to take what they want.
Casey Pendelton has penned a wonderful opening to a great story in High Heels and Bloodsuckers. Trish has lost hours of her day and rough treatment from her fiancé is all she can look forward to. When she begins to remember what happened to her she realizes that a whole new world has opened at her feet.
The beginning was great, but I felt let down by the ending. I hope that she will be able to expand this short story into a full length novel.
Mae Powers brings a breath of fresh air to the stereotypical definition of a vampire in Vamyrus. With her unique take on the vampire myth she draws us into a futuristic world with secret societies and rituals. This was a great read. I truly hope to find that she will write more with this take on vampires.
Ella Scopilo takes us on an almost scholarly journey in Of Elves and Vampires: The Beginning. I found that it read like a textbook; a very erotic textbook as the main character Remi stumbles upon a man and a woman in the wilds of Wisconsin in a very unique circumstance. The way it was written is from the perspective of an outsider looking back on the past. The premise was great, but again I feel that a more complete story would have been much better.
Terry Spear revisits the Slayer/vampire enmity in this story and creates a couple that burns up the page. I definitely enjoyed the sensuality of Vampiric Calling.
In Thanatos, by Emily Veinglory, we are taken down the road of despair through the eyes of a vampire tired of living. Although she’s only a hundred years old she is tired; when a lovely young man picks her up in a bar, Lynn knows that she’d rather leave with a smile. The young man is a hunter and a new one at that, but he is attractive and perhaps he can provide her with a peaceful death.
I have not read anything by Emily Veinglory, now I feel that I have missed a great author. Her depth of emotion in these few pages really made an interesting story out what could have been a depressing story. The almost dreamy quality of Thanatos added to the pain and depression in a very poignant way. This was a good way to end this anthology.
Vamprotica 2005 contained vampires in all walks of life, all time periods, and all mythologies. While some of the stories felt unfinished there were some amazing authors who really wove some great tales. I hope that some of these stories will be reworked into full novels; they were great starts, but failed to wrap up the stories they were telling.
