Jo decides to move to New Orleans and take up a new director’s position at a failing community center near the homes of long-time friends. After the catastrophe that makes her life painful and too complex in Washington, DC, she's all for the step down in prestige as long as she can escape the realities that have left her a shell of her former self. Unbeknownst to her, both of Jo’s old friends and their husbands are vampires. Their extra perceptions hone in on Jo’s condition, but their concern is more for the erratic behavior and unhealthy state in which she is functioning. Denial is the name of the game, and Jo won't tell them what sent her running full speed from DC and her old life.
When Jo meets Maksim, he is easily the most attractive and alluring man she has ever encountered. She is also aware of the lines of women who seem to agree wholeheartedly. Luckily for Jo, her life is such a mess that the irresistible charms of this man barely have her blinking. He - or any man - is the last thing she wants right now. For Maksim, a demon, being totally disregarded is a complete shock - it's never before happened in his entire existence. He may be here to find out where his sister, a half-demon, may have disappeared to, but he's also decided to make tempting Jo into sleeping with him his pet project. All he needs is a plan…
Maksim and Jo’s dual attraction may end up being a temporary high, but the issues in Jo’s life are only growing worse. Maksim finds himself attached and compassionate to the situation unraveling before his eyes; for a demon, such feelings should not exist. What is going on? Who is Jo, and how can she hold such sway over him? As the details of her fear and the reality of her situation begin to reveal themselves, the inexplicable tie to Maksim is identified and the ability to correct them may not exist.
